The 404 Jeffery was built as the bolt action equivalent of the .450/400x3” and bought out in the modified standard length M98 action in 1905. The reason for the increase in bullet diameter from that used in the .450/400x3” was, in conjunction with shortening the case from 3” (75mm to 73mm), to keep the pressure at a safe level for use in the lengthened standard action. The 400 H&H case length is just over 72mm with a long neck so it is the modern bolt action equivalent if you like, of both the .404 Jeffery and the .450/400x3”. Ironically there is possibly a greater range of .423” calibre bullets available now than for the .411” calibre due to the growing popularity of the old .404J workhorse. |
