Re: Favorite Loads for the 505 Gibbs

NitroX,

You should not believe everything you read on the net .

The loads I posted for the 505 Gibbs are precisely what I say there are. I don't know the brass make, as I have forgotten and all the information I have written down is internal volume. Pressure data was analytically arrived at, but the velocities were chronographed, and the powder charges weighed with a balance beam scale. As I stated the rifle had a 25" barrel. To be honest I don't know who it stacks up against ANY reload manual, but feel free to check it out. By the way, the simulation thinks that the pressures for the loads I posted are ~ 40000 psi for the 525 grain load and ~ 43000 psi for the 600 grain load.

The 500 AHR will achieve 2300 fps with a 600 grain bullet if you use 122 grains of IMR4350. It will hit 2435 fps with a 535 grain bullet if you use 128.5 grains of IMR4350. These are chronographed velocities from a rifle with a 26" barrel. Again extraction is an issue when calculated chamber pressures exceed about 45000 psi. It is important to understand this isn't sticky bolt, the bolt turns easily until the extraction cam is engaged, which is about 45 degrees of bolt swing.

Of course feel free to believe that 118 grains of H4831 SC will hurl those old 525 grain slugs at 2400+ fps or whatever one individual who claims to own a 505 Gibbs stated sometime ago.

If you don't want me answering questions on this site, just say so, I will certainly depart. I haven't completely left the other site you mention because I was THERE FIRST, damn it!

Scott
