Chuck, I was reading this post on a 505 and 404 stock and saw grain similarities on the 404 stock that split through the wrist. Take a look at this post on Accurate reloading.

The suguestion here and elsewhere is to epoxy a rod in through the wrist from the butt if that is the only axcess. Would hate to see such a nice stock damaged.
