Correct.

It seems to be carbon that comes out, or a combination of carbon mixed with oil that sweats out of the pores in the steel.

Of course, some of the patch out will also get into the pores
when cleaning it and will keep working slowly.

In the military, it always seemed to be powder / carbon that came out as the patches were always black.
