I have several take off barrels from Ruger No. 1 Rifles, two are 458 Win Mag. One has never been fired. Thread is 1"-16, same as the Ruger bolt action, the Win M70, and the Montana actions. One of my plans is to install a No. 1 458 barrel on a M70 or a Montana action. Will make an interesting rifle, as the barrel has the sight rib plus a nice banded front sight, and a barrel band swivel lug. And is has enough weight to help handle the recoil. Simple job, just face off the end enough to remove the No. 1 extractor slot, extend the shank and threads to fit the bolt action, cut an extractor slot if for an M70CRF, and run the chamber reamer in to restore the chamber length. Also would make an easy 458 Lott. Real easy job on a Ruger or a Montana action as they do not have an extractor slot. And, if one wanted to make an "Ugly Gun", obtain a long eye relief scope and mount in Ruger Rings on the rib, as the rib has the cutouts for the ring clamps. I will post a photo in a few days with a No. 1 458 barrel screwed into a bolt action. |
