Well, I just had to vote for the .416 Rigby. But then, I have one for some specialized reasons. I bought it with the specific intention of hunting Africa without a guide. Which I will finally do in 2010. I WILL NOT be hunting elephant. I can't ever see hunting elephants without a PH. But if something goes wrong, I want a rifle capable of dealing with it. And if experienced elephant hunters like Richard Harland, in his book "Ndlovu" arrive at the consensus that fully adequate stopping rifles start with the 40s shooting 400 grain bullets, who am I to argue? It crosses a threshold the .375 doesn't. On the other hand, it is nearly as versatile as the .375. Since a walking safari in Cameroon is pretty much the definition of a one-rifle safari, I'll be bringing my .416. And practicing a lot before I go. And doing my best to avoid elephants. |
