Tim, Just replied to your e-mail. Sorry for the delay. I still have a large old library of books on guns that I collected from the early 70s until the end of the 90s in India and every time I read something like this here, I feel the need to go there and ship it over here. Yes, I have read what you say in several old books and remember John Amber severely criticise German gunmakers in one of his pieces for the quality of wood that they use as well as for the quality of chequering which he felt was unfortunate considering the overall superb quality of their guns. That said, these days, the Germans and Austrians do use some of the finest wood in the world on their guns and I was mroe than a little surprised to see the very plain wood on the Velser rifles. It must be a function thing . . . Good hunting! |
