Re: CZ 550 owners

Today I sighted in a Leupold 1-4X Vari-X II scope on my new CZ 550 FS in 6.5 x 55 mm Swedish Mauser chambering. The very first group at 100 yards was 0.559 inches. I put up a fresh target and shot five consecutive three-shot groups at 100 yards. They measure 0.611, 1.422, 0.660, 1.141 and 1.198 inches. The average is 1.006 inches. The load is the Sierra 120 gr SPT, Winchester cases, Federal Match primers, and enough IMR-4895 to make 2650 fps, measured at 5 yards.

The largest of the five groups really shouldn't be counted. Before I shot it I removed the soft sandbag under the forend and rested the gun on a very hard sandbag. For the remaining groups, I replaced the soft sandbag. That one group is not only larger, but it moved significantly to the right as well. If I remove it, the average becomes 0.903 inch.

I'm certain that with a higher power scope I can shoot five groups that will average three quarters of a minute of angle or less. However, as a hunting gun, the 1-4X Leupold is just about perfect, and I'm satisfied with one MOA. That'll get the job done farther than I'm willing to shoot on game.

Take care, Tom
