which of the 450s ?

Reading some of the recent post
about rechambering to the 450s.
I am considering a 450 of some
type in a Ruger #1 Anniversary
model that is currently 45-70.
All of the re-chamber cost would
be about the same. How does the
long term cost (brass,etc.)
compare? What is the most popular
of the 450S? Is one more practical
than others? I looked in "Any Shot
You Want" they appear close.

What do you want the rifle for?
For North America the 45/70 loaded hot is plenty enough for any game suitable for a single shot.
If you are talking about hunting in Africa either the 450 3 1/4" or the 450 No2 is a good choice, but recoil wil be stout in the Ruger No1.
It would be simple and in-expensive to to rechamber for the 45/120. Dougaboy has done this and tell you the Ballistics.
I would think in the No1 you could get close to the 458 Win Mag.
If I was not planning on using it in Africa I would leave it as a 45/70 and just load it to Ruger 45/70 pressures.
I have a standard Ruger No1 in 47/70 and my standard load has all the recoil and power for ANY North American game.

I completely agree with 450No2. You can load your 45/70 to insane levels. I had one and was able to get 2150 fps out of a 400 grain bullet. And in a 7.5 lbs rifle that truly is insane!

Does any have the ballistics on the 450 no2 or the other 450 3 1/2"? Whats the difference between that and 45-90, 45-100, 45-120? I understand the increased case size, but what about pressure levels etc.

The 450#2 is probably the greatest double rifle cartridge ever designed. It shoots the ubiquitous .458 bullets, delivers 5000+ lbs of ME at only 10 tons per square inch.

The book Cartridges of he World is very good for quick comparisons
betwen all cartridges as it is so well laid out.
If you don't have it I would suggest that you get a cop

Another possible option may be to try some of the Garrett cartridges only useable in a #1 45-70?
They are big and bad, and if I recall correctly, their website has some info on using them on African hunts.

I could be wrong but I think I would go for the ordinary .450 NE which I think is the .450 NE 3 1/4" because it appears to be made from .45 basic brass and might even be the same case that the .45-120 Sharps is based on...if so it might be the least likely of the bunch to be discontinued by brass makers.

What is your feeling about 450 Rigby in a DG Rifle..If you have any thoughts or other suggestion on this I would like to hear all you have to say..

Richard, the 450NE3 1/4" is not the same case as the 45-120. Though they are the same length, the 450NE has a far larger powder capacity. The rim dia is much larger(.626"), as is the head of the cartridge over the web (.548"). With a powder capacity of 136.04 grs water.
While the 45-120 is a smaller case ecentually a long 45-70, with the only difference between them being the case length. The 45-120 has a rim dia of .597, and a head dia of .506, and a case capacity of 113.04 grs water.
The 45-120 is made from the 45 basic brass, but the 450NE is the parent case for the 450NE 3'1/4", and all the smaller rounds built on the 450 case like the 450/400NE 3", and 3 1/4". The 450#2 NE is made on the .500 base brass. The 450NE chambering reamer will clean out a 458 Win Mag chamber completely, while the 45-120 will not!

I would go for the 450 3 1/4. It is a very traditional cartridge in single shot Farquarson's of which the Ruger is, at least, a visual copy. With a little bit of stock clean up you could make a #1 look very much like a Jeffery's.
That can't be all bad.

Rim thickness and twist are different between the .450NE and the 45/70, I ended up getting a new barrel blank for the #1 that I am building to .450 NE 3 1/4".
About the only .450NE brass available with Bell gone has the thin(.040) rim while the 45/70 brass - and your chamber's rim recess - will be around .060. Dave
