In W.W.GREENER'S THE GUN and it's Development" there is a picture in the rifle section of 8 shots on a card, IIRC at 50 yards with a Smoothbore 8 bore using round balls. It is in the rifle section, I assume due to African or Indian usage on dangerous game.
