I personally don't approve of shooting over baits either, and to be honest I'm not big on hunting predators full stop. But it is a big part of the safari industry and the majority of people that want to shoot lions or leopards will do their time bored out of their minds in the blind. Given that fact, it is good that the PH should be properly trained. As I see it, the purpose of this exercise is not to assess the candidates shooting ability, but to recreate and test the candidate's whole approach to setting up a lion bait and blind, and then re-create the after shot approach with the client through to the trophy preparation, etc, etc, without actually having to bring in a lion and shoot it. I didn't say that I agree with it and maybe it could be done without actually firing a shot - thats it something that the ZPHA will have to decide. |
