After listening to all the opinions here, its obvious that no matter what you do, someone will object here on the forum. What matters most of course is what is acceptable to your hunting mates in the field. In northern Australia, the shoulder carry, butt forward, is most often used for unslung rifles, especially heavy doubles. As others have pointed out, the hunter needs to be aware of his muzzle direction at all times, and this carry is no exception. However its a simple matter to angle the muzzles upward and off to one side, and since this is the natural tendency this carry is considered safer than most.
