Just returned from a safari in the remote northern Mozambique Provence of Cabo Delgado were I hunted Buffalo and Eland with Zimbabwe PH Stuart Taylor in the Niassa reserve's Safari block B. The Safari operator was the reputable Jumbo Moore/ Kambako Safaris. We took the SA Saturday flight from JHB to Pemba and on Sunday from Pemba to Kambako air field with Kambako's Cessna 207. Block B is over 350'000acrs and almost double with the adjacent Courtada. It is a big area considering the small quota allowed by the reserve and I had it for my self for most of my stay. This is a lovely area for a safari but don't come to shoot a heap of trophy's. It is a place for a Safari for selected game. This area has some big Elephant with a minimum size allowed of 60lbs with a good possibility of 85lbs+ . The area has good numbers of Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Eland a select Plains Game. We saw no evidence of poaches. At present Kambako has two main camps and one fly camp with plans for a second fly camp. The Eland and Buffalo are often taken after very long tracking hunts. We were often on spoor for up to seven hours and often had to give up as they kept on the move until mid day when the afternoon winds would betray our presence. A hunt for the great Blue Bulls (old Eland) an excellent challenge with one being taken by tracking a well earned trophy. Although my Eland was huge with great horns, the old Blue Bull eluded us. I used my Husky 9.3Mauser with Woodleigh 320grn solids and Swift A frame 300grn softs with a muzzle velocity of only 2230fps with full penetration except for one solid which was found in the stomach in perfect condition. |
