maybe a tad off topic but while you good folks are discussing booking agents, does anyone know what their take of the safari price is? ie are they getting 5, 10, 15% of the safari cost?

I know these guys dont work for free but I often wonder what their take is and what services they render for the dough.

I assume that they get their piece of the pie before sending the payment on to the outfitter/PH.

I have often thought, if the agent's commission was not built INTO the total price, but instead ADDITIONAL to the usual safari fees, how many people would be willing to pay it?

The normal commission used to be up to 15% of daily rates, but sometimes now it also includes trophy fees and more as well. Plus the inevitable free hunts etc.

I much prefer to deal direct myself with the outfitter. Even if an agent is involved asking questions direct to the outfitter/PH also cuts out a layer of confusion and speeds evething up. I know I asked about several things on a recent hunt, was told THIS, THAT and THAT. Everything has been organised. None of it happened and certainly the PH knew nothing about any of it. So even if it was communicated to a boss of the outfitter, it never got to the PH in the field.

The lesson. Speak direct to your actual PH as much as possible.
