I remember that well. I have friends who were living in Howick at the time (now they're in the Dargle Valley), and they told me how cold it was. All the passes in the Drakensburg were snowed shut for days. They just don't have the snow removal equipment. The pictures in the newspapers they sent me were unbelievable.
