Look, I am not toting the 45-70 as some miracle caliber here but to say that the round that has probably killed more 2000 pound animals than any other on earth (the great american bison slaughter) is only good for 200-300 pound animals is plain silly.
Are you sure the .45/70 was the main round for the "buffalo slaughter"?
I read somewhere once that that was a historical falacy and the article listed numerous reasons why other cartridges were used and backed up the arguments with reason and evidence.
A .30-06 or 7x57 can be used to kill cape buffalo. They are not armoured and bullet proof. Any cartridge capable of reasonable penetration will kill a wild bovine including cape buffalo. In reasonable circumstances a .45/70 too will kill any cape buffalo on earth.
