I've posted this image before here in a couple of other places, but your comment makes the muzzle end of one of my sixteen bore double rifles pretty relavent to this topic.

The folks at the Liege Museum of Arms call this gun a 'gamekeepers' gun. The 'gamekeeper' performed at a similar level as today's professional hunter.
