In reply to: Mick The cape gun in the photos which I posted was I believe made by Rolph Backnik (splg?) the same as Marrakai's "Fat Lady" .577 double, so they are modern creations from Greener shotguns. Marrakai I believe explained the .577 NE cartridge "best" fitted the action rather than a smaller chambering. So if this is the case, the .577 was picked for gunsmithing reasons not "field" reasons. The WR .500 3" BP / 12 gauge cape gun you mention does not sound unlikely as a .500 BP would be lesser in power and make a handy mixed game cape gun for say a farmer in South Africa. Interestingly John Dawkins the Aussie elephant hunter also had one barrel of his H&H .450 double rifle bored out to 20 gauge (I think) as its bore was damaged. He converted it to a .450/20 g cape gun. (I may need to verify some of these details). |
