I've used the 458 Win. Mag., 300 Win. Mag., and 416 Rem. Mag. on buffalo. The 458 worked very well at close range with 500 gr. Trophy Bonded solids loaded to just under 2100 fps. In fact, I shot one buffalo in the front of the chest from 20 feet away, and the bullet went clear through him, end-to-end. I used the 300 Win. Mag. with 180 gr. Winchester Fail-Safe bullets on two buffalo as an expedient when my 458 developed mechanical problems, this with the blessing of my PH and Tanzanian game scout. Luckily, I had opportunites on bulls that were about 100yds. away, and I shot both of them in the spine, off-hand. Both of them went straight down, and without fuss. With a lesser bullet, I don't think I would have had such good results, and no, I'll NEVER shoot another buff' with a .300 ever again. More recently, I've used the 416 Rem. Mag. with 370 gr. North Fork solids and softs. This is my favorite buffalo rifle, cartridge, and set of loads by far, and it combines truly sufficent power with precision and shootability better than anything I've used to date (which isn't much of a list!). I plan to use my 375 H&H for my next buffalo hunt, simple because I want to use the 375 on at least one buffalo to gain the experience of it, but if I could only retain that 416 Remington to use on buffalo for the balance of my career, I'd be content...........
