Painful to shoot? I would not hunt ANY game with a rifle that is "painful" to shoot. If your double hurts you, I would suggest either getting it properly fitted to you or trading it off for a lighter NE cartridge.

As far as investing, no doubles aren't worth the investment since they seldom make you any significant money ie small ROI (return on investment). I have one double left, but hunt almost exclusively with magnum length mauser bolt guns. That is my preference only, and has nothing to do with anyone/anything else.
