In Africa I have seen two sorts of calling be used. I have posted it last year on this very forum.

The fawn cry that is like a fawn moaning to call its mother. This cry is calling the duikers, the bushbuck and sometimes the leopard or any animal
The lion roaring and cough to lure a lion. No doubt this works when lion are around.

As the photo shows, when the lion is deeply asleep, one has to blow very close to his ear.
