OK I will play devil's advocate.
I know of a gentleman who tested his .45/70 who used hard cast 540 gr bullets out of a Marlin Guide gun. They tested it on an elephant's skull. They had just shot one with an A-square of some sort. The client and PH believe the test shots into the skull provided adequate penetration. He also shot a buffalo with one the same week.
I was in the camp in the Matetsi that week as well.
