The big argument for 45-70 level gun fans is the great penetration of the special P+ rounds. So if the gun has penetration and FPE whats the beef? Your argument has no direction and makes no sense what so ever.
So I guess I support stunt hunting, because I plan on taking my Marlin 1895 on Safari chambered in the 457 Alaskan with 4000FPE, great penetration and five shots. Dead is dead, who cares how you kill it, its the hunt that matters.

The problem is that a 45-70 has anemic velocity when using a 500 grain bullet (1550 fps), which in turn leads to abysmal penetration. The 458 Win Mag with its original loads of 500 grain bullets going 1700 to 1900 fps would not reach an elephant's brain on a frontal shot. There is no reason to expect superior performance by dropping the velocity another 300 fps.
