Talking with the locals

I have found that knowing at least a few sentences or greetings in the local African language often helps break the ice when dealing with officials, as well as with other people you are in contact with such as trackers etc.

Do any of you try to learn some phrases in the local language before leaving home? Or have any such phrases helped you out in the past?
