The bad reputation of the .458 Win Mag came it being designed to duplicate .450 NE ballisticsof 480 grs at 2,150 fps. But it practice it was achieving only maybe 1,800 fps with 500 gr bullets. If with modern powders a 480 gr bullet could be driven at 2,050 to 2,150 fps it's as effective as any .450 NE has been for the last 120 years. Netperts repeating stuff they've read often harp on about the .458 Lott being needed. Is that 2,400 for with 500 grs? I'm assume they've shot a Lott and can actually handle the recoil? I'd rather go for a .500 and 570 grs at 2100 fps than a Lott. A .458 Win Mag M98 sounds fine to me. A classic. Should have bought a Whitworth .458 being sold by a member of these forums in the past. A double rifle like Michael Fell's lovely .458 while not flanged, will do the job in style. Robert Borsak uses a .458 double rifle as well. See a story or two on these forums. |
