I think newer powders have a lot to do with it but I have no personal experience with that.

I once had a Ruger No. 1 Tropical in .458 Win Mag that I shot a few times with factory 510 gr loads but that was 45+ years ago. I haven't fired one since then. I never did any actual hunting with it... Well, except for a couple of jackrabbits on a friend's uncle's ranch. I found the 300 gr soft points to be effective jackrabbit stoppers.
