We’ve talked a little in the past about the financial circumstances of Karen Blixen’s family and the cost of her 17 years in Africa.
I came across this:

Apparently the Blixen family invested and lost the equivalent of 100 million DKK (about 14 million USD) in today’s money. This seems like an extraordinary sum, even if the farm produced zero revenue.

Anyway - the first seemingly authoritative comment I’ve ever seen on the subject.
