Re: How to survive an elephant attack..

Quote:

I have seen on NE member larcher's phone a video of the most dramatic elephant charge with Buzz Charlton. Not public footage.

JB - larcher and his cousin Luc were BOW hunting bull elephant. The elephant bursts from the Bushvedt very close range, JB and Buzz step to the side. Luc was using a camera and doesn't. I think Buzz fired a shot. The elephant puts his head down on top of Luc and pushes him along for maybe up to twenty feet. Maybe another shot and the elephant falls over.

Very dramatic.

Amazingly Luc survived. Broken collar bone and ribs, maybe pelvis, I forget.

Doubly amazing Luc wanted to get out hunting again a few days later and did. Now shooting a rifle. The recoil upsetting his ribs everytime it was fired .... Or something like that.

I don't think this video will ever feature on a Buzz Charlton video ...

I would love to see Larcher's video..that is crazy.. and as you stated, LUC is VERY lucky to be alive.. wasn't his time ..

MY experience.. the elephants in the Zambezi Valley were the most aggressive I have experienced, period.. Thoughts were because of the poachers.. Sadly, that is were Ian the PH was killed as well a year after we hunted together, also by an elephant..

Had more "close" calls there in 21 days than all my other trips to Africa combined.. some very similar to what he described in this article..

THIS trip and all that came with it convinced me I will never again take a PG rifle alone smaller than a 375H&H... While you may be hunting PG, the tuskless cows don't know that.. nor the lioness ..
