Re: Opinions on .358Win in Savage 99

I have a winchester 94 in 356 Win which is (was) Winchester's attempt to get near 358 ballistics from a 94 with its tubular magazine and not so strong action. Winchester did the same with their 307 Win re the 308.

They used to load a 250 gr load for this round and I've still got some. The 356 is about 100 or 150fps slower than the 358. Reloading manuals show greater differences between the rounds with hevier bullets, less with lighter bullets. The round uses a flat nosed bullet. Winchester now only loads the 200gr bullet.

I've shot a couple of deer I'd guess weighed 120-140lbs live weight with the 250 grain load and it is very effective. On neck and shoulder shots there is some evidence of the bullet beginning to expand but not much. No bullet recoveries. The deer shot in either the neck or shoulder dropped in their tracks. Relatively little meat loss. I don't recall shooting one through the lungs but would guess the 250gr bullet would sail through a 130lb deer leaving calibre entry and near calibre exit.

My rifle weighs 7lbs on the nose empty with apeture sight. Recoil with the 250 grain load is signifigant. I would think the 358 model 99 would be a great rifle for deer through elk and moose size game at close to med distances.

Checking the Nosler, Speer, Hornaday and Barnes manuals shows no bullet heavier than 250 grains. Vel runs from 2750 for 180gr to 2300-2400 for the 250. Winchester loads only the 200 gr at 2490 and with a 150yd zero this load is shown as 1.5" high at 100yds and 3.6" low at 200. (Intestingly Winchester loads the 356 with a 200gr bullet at 2460, which isn't nearly the difference in muzzle velocity that the manuals show)

Hope this helps,

JPK
