Your mate should consider a .375 for giraffe. They are bigger than a cape buffalo, and every bit as rugged, strong and tenacious. Personally I do not think that a .308 Barnes X at any velocity is sufficient. If he insists on a .308 bullet, then a solid is the way to go. Even a .458 Lott with softs has been known to fail to penetrate through the shoulder blade.

All that being said, if he slips a bullet between the ribs and does not flub his shot, the giraffe will die just like a buffalo. The other option is to snipe a giraffe's head at long range.
