War On Poaching Intensified

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) have recovered over 7,000 snare traps from poachers from Tsavo East and West national parks within one year.

The traps are used to catch dik dik, impala, giraffes and buffaloes.

Sixteen subsistence and commercial poachers have also been arrested and charged in court for consuming and selling game meat. At the same, time, more than 40 animals were found trapped in the parks by the two conservation organisations.

Speaking at Manyani yesterday during a clean up exercise, DSWT head of the disnaring team, Mr Isaack Maina was accompanied by Tsavo East tourist warden, Mr Daniel Njoroge.

The clean up exercise, which was conducted by DSWT and KWS officials, covered a 20 km stretch from Manyani to Man Eaters. It was aimed at keeping Tsavo parks free of garbage. About six tonnes of litter were collected and disposed of.
