Wow! I experience the exact same thing! Amazing! I honestly can't explain this phenomina. What I found from others who suffer from this is that when you get to the last stages of the countdown, when time stands still, is to lay in a 2 weeks supply of your favorite alchoholic beverage and consume it over a 6 day period. If you're lucky, you'll be in a complete drunken stupor and passed out most of the time. Then stop drinking the day before you leave, and consume mass quanties of heavily caffinated coffee. This will help the time seem to pass by much faster than if you were sober. Unfortuately, I have a genetic blood clotting disorder, and have to limit my alchohol intake because i have to take blood thinning meds. So I just have to suffer when time stands still.
