I accounted for about 90 head of plains game with my pre-64 Model 70 Winchester in .300 H&H. Of course, I never hunted plains game out of a hide I had to get into in the dark. In fact, the only hide I ever used was the one I took my leopard out of, and in that situation, I was using my Krieghoff double rifle in .375 H&H.

Factory loaded ammunition with 180 grain Silvertips did the job admirably, with everything from oryx and sable to dik-dik, although I would have used a .222 on the latter, had I had one handy.
