Re: Hippo kills Australian woman

No idea.

The incident took place on Monday night at Fisherman's Camp, a popular lakeside camping ground around which signs warn tourists to beware of hippos after dark.

I've actually stayed in that camp, almost twenty years ago.

Across the water on Lake Naivasha is a lovely island with numerous waterbuck, giraffe and other antelope, where one can walk among the animals. They are quite unafraid. Lovely fish eagles too.

Some of these tourists are real fools. In Ambroselli I remember a whole bunch of tourists rushed towards a herd of elephant which fed into a camp ground to excitedly take photographs. The staff ran after them yelling warnings that the elephants were dangerous but most of the mazungas ignored them. Of course it is possible just to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. If stumbling around in the dark it is possible to bump into a hippo. Camped once on the Zambezi in Zambia hippo were feeding right outside the tent.
