It was reported years ago that a one or more herds of "feral" elephants, mostly males, had been culled in southern Africa. They were engaging in these random attacks on other animals, rhinos particularly. They were so destructive and badly socialized there was no alternative but to cull them.

It was concluded by the experts that they were a group of orphaned young elephants who had banded together after their herds had been destroyed by poachers. Basically they were a collection of traumatized individuals who were without adult supervision during their formative years. The result was remarkably like humans, except that we engage in self-culling.
