Re: A Soft-shooting Plains Game Rifle

Ripp,

Why not use the .270 he knows and shoots well ??

Upgrade you bullet to a projectile that will retain weight while penetrating and place your bullets correctly.

Alot of shooting will be well under 200 yards....usually 100yds .......... depending what/where you're shooting.

Can't see why his "good ole .270" wouldn't work a treat.

My plains game shooting has been with a .30/06 (180gn Partitions) or a .300 Wby Mag (same partitions) and never encountered any problems that could not be attributed to poor shooting.

You don't need a new "super blaster" to shoot African plains game that's probably about the size of the game you shoot at home with your .270.

I agree, think 150's out of the 270 would work just fine...while there may be some that will kill more efficiently or with more authority, my thoughts are, dead is dead..and shot placement is much more important than the difference between a 270 or 30-06 or 7mm or whatever..

All these article make for an interesting read and while doing such our minds can wander to Africa thinking of the times we have chased plains game, DG or both, whatever the case may be. Also they make for an interesting debate.

Personally, when I do hunt plains game I prefer the heavier bullets as you really never know what you may run in to..eland, zebra, kudu, waterbuck, who knows..my last couple of trips I was shooting a 200gr Swift A-Frame out of my 300RUM. They worked perfectly and if I were to take another PG hunt would probably use the same combo. While a 300RUM is not necessary, I really like that rifle. Why mess with success?

I plan to take the little woman over in the next year or two. She has a Kimber in .308 what she shoots very well. Based on that alone, I plan to have her use that for the plains game and am certain it will be more than enough for anything we run in to. I plan to load it with 165 gr bullets --either Barnes or Swift.
