That's the difference though, isn't it. In your case it was the elephants choice to put themselves there. You weren't being an annoying little rat size dog nipping at his heals.

We had the same thing at Addo in South Africa. Front, back and one side. The other side was a bank that I couldn't get up if I tried. But we had just plonked ourselves there as about 15 odd elephants (15 odd in number, nothing odd about the elephants ) came up an incline. They parted around us like water. I only barely managed to contain myself and not reach out and touch one.
