The view from the plane looks like that if they had let the bear go any further that he would have gone over the ridge and they wouldn't have had a shot.
Just rewatched it and still seems to me the bear was coming closer to them. Bear was on a ridge that that intersected with the ridge they were on. They could of moved further uhil to close the gap as well. The guide certainly did not look happy as the bear was moving through the snow leaving a big blood trail.
