I thought that I saw the trace of the first shot go into the right shoulder area and exit. Also the bear was travelling left to right going over the ridge that they were sitting on, if they had waited much longer the bear would be going away from them. The view from the plane looks like that if they had let the bear go any further that he would have gone over the ridge and they wouldn't have had a shot.
