Foot pounds of energy is what will stop a charge, I doubt the a 10ga, or 12ga shot column will have as much energy that a solid projectile will have. So my choice would be if it had to be a shot gun would be solid slugs in either a 10 or 12 ga. or a double rifle in 45 cal or larger with quick expanding soft points.
