I'll be taking a circa 1920s G. Gibbs Mauser in .318WR with iron sights to the South African bushveld in 2006. If you can wait that long I'll tell you how good it was. I selected it because several sources claimed it was a close as you can get to "the best all-around" for Africa, it is a beautiful example of English gunmaking, AND there is the adventure and romance of using a historic caliber. In my humble opinion, you don't get that from the latest whiz-bang magnum. It's all in what floats your boat. My brother-in-law, who will be with me, doesn't give a hang about history and will be packing a scoped Weatherby in 300 Wby Magnum. We'll see who has the most fun.
