KWS Kill Rogue Leopard in Nakuru The East AFrican Standard February 6, 2003 Wanjiru Macharia Nairobi Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) game warders shot dead a leopard that has been terrorising residents in parts of Engachura farm. The male leopard was trapped by the residents after two attempts by the KWS to catch it failed. The residents then called the game warders to take away the animal at 10 pm on Monday night. It, however, took the warders seven hours to arrive at the scene where they shot dead the big cat, saying it was too dangerous. They said the predator was trapped as it tried to sneak in to a sheep pen at a home where it had snatched its prey two days earlier. The locals, who have been living in fear, said they made the trap after the leopard threatened to finish their animals. The residents said the animal seemed to be familiar with the KWS cages, as two attempts to trap it using them had failed. "After the two attempts failed, we decided to make our own cage and place it at a strategic point next to a sheep pen," said Mwangi Gachanja. http://allafrica.com/stories/200302060485.html |
