I recently re-read Four Fires by Bryce Courtenay. It's a great read and deals partly with the Japanese taking Singapore and subsequent events..... the book recommends Sandakan. A conspiracy of silence by Lynette Ramsay Silver.

It's a disturbing read but unbelievably touching and although I had to keep putting it down. I had to keep picking it up again.

I highly recommend it to anyone but esp to the Aussies.

The bravery of the guys involved is simply breathtaking.
