I saw a German hunter take a Texas heart shot on a big Eland bull using the 7x57 with a 175 grain X bullet. The bullet entered the ham and ended up in the brisket! Over 6' of penetration! That was my first introduction to the importance of sectional density when it comes to penetration. Two years ago a friend went with me to RSA for his first Safari. He bought a Win. Model 70, classic stainless in 375 H&H 2 months before the trip. He was terrified of it, and shot it very poorly. The first morning we sighted in our rifles, and he was shooting 10-11 inch patterns. The P.H. tried the rifle and put 2 consecutive shots in the same hole. He then told my friend that it was aparent that he was afraid of the gun and couldn't let him shoot it. The P.H. gave my friend a 7x57 loaded with 160 grain Nosler Partitions. My friend ended up taking 11 animals from Steenbok up to Gemsbok and Zebra, with 1 shot each. |
