When I was young I took a cut-priced hunt in NZ, which included some time in the Southern Alps after chamois and red deer, not that we got any.

I didn't know anything about tipping PHs in those days but the hunt organiser's son, who guided that part of the trip, admired my binoculars, saying you couldn't get those over there. He persuaded me to leave them with him on the understanding he would send the money asap. I never got any money but, in hindsight, guess that was the tip I should have offered him.
