An idea would be to carry funds in more than one location on yourself. So if not searched, you can hand over only one location.

If "asked" to give up funds, sometimes one can bargain, or negotiate. I was once asked for US$500 and negotiated with the crooks for about 40 minutes. Ended up giving up GBP35 (about $50). With hindsight may have been able to get away with paying nothing, but $50 is better than being knifed or disappearing. The story and experience is "worth" $50.
