Not sure which Congo he is speaking about, but when I was in Zaire/Congo, traveller's checks were worthless as the remoteness of the areas precluded any cashing of said checks and they weren't negotiable as issued.

Cash is the thing, tho troublesome, just like as Nitro says carrying one's passport. Of course, when needed, really needed, the passport must be on one's person.
