Travellers cheques sound like a good idea. At least if they are lost, you can recover the funds. As long as you can pay what you need with them. You might need more cash of course on a self guided trip.

I usually carry funds with me if unsure of where to put them safely. Of course there is a risk, just like carrying your passport on your person.
