When Im tracking wounded (dangerous) game, I always carry my rifle in my hands with my thumb on the safety. FWIW, I try to reduce the 'charge rate' by never charging in after the shot. (Excepting Elephant, which assuming it falls over immediatly, I'm usually straight in with the client for him to 'kill it again') After the shot, I just have everyone crouch down and wait a while......... then when we walk slowly and quietly to where the animal was and begin the track. When we see the animal, if it's on it's feet still, I have the client shoot again and if it's already down, I ALWAYS approach it from behind, with my rifle in my shoulder and when I'm about 6 foot away, I have the tracker shoot the animal in the arse with a slingshot. If it so much as farts at that range, I whack it with the 500. |
