Re: Heading to Africa, which gun should I take?

Okay guys - I had a REAL eye opener this weekend! I went into Cabela's to purchase some H&H 375 premium bullets to shoot (so I can start getting ready for the hunt). And when I saw the price for 20 shells - I almost had a heart attack! - $85 for a box of 20! I went straight over the the re-loading area and started looking at how to get started. Shooting the premium stuff will put me in the poor house. That may have made the decision for me... I may end up taking just the 30-06 after all... we'll see.

For both rifles, reload with cheap bullets for practice. The cheapest cup and core you can find will still shoot plenty well enough for practice. No reason on earth to shoot premium bullets into a sand bank! (Just remember to resight your rifle for your premium ammo of choice before the hunt.)

I would be happy with the 165ge TBBC's and I might look at the 165gr TSX as well, but the 180gr TBBC, North Fork or NP, AF would be my choice. For the 375H&H, look at the 270grers. They will run 2700fps, which is what the 180gr 30-06 bullets will run, giving you naerly the same trajectories to keep things simple.

Since both rifles are the same model, they should fit the same. So some practice with the 375H&H but more with the 30-06 to minimize costs.

BTW, take both. It is so little extra trouble to take two and you are going so far, why be in a situation where you might be hunting with a camp clunker that might or might not 1. fit, 2. function well, 3. be accurate, 4. ... Confidence is a huge part of success, why risk it? Using your own rifles is also very satisfying and enjoyable, why not make sure you will be?
